About the prospect
This is not a mine in the ordinary sense. It is a prospect — an attempt — and in practice that is all it ever became. Fifteen metres into the rock, worked for thirteen years in the 1700s, and then abandoned.
The deposit lies in an area otherwise known for iron ore, and that is what makes it interesting: here the ore is of a different kind. Chalcopyrite, lead and zinc minerals, garnet and fluorite in a small contact zone — an entirely different mineral company than the magnetite in the neighbouring mines a few hundred metres away.
The prospect lay untouched for almost two hundred years before anyone tried again. The trial working of 1906–07 lasted just under two years, with four men and 1,565 man-days, and was closed down without ever coming to anything.
The opening is still there. It is unsecured, unmarked and has no visitor facilities.
